Introduction: What is the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?

The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a groundbreaking initiative launched by the Government of India with the ambitious goal of empowering residential households with free electricity generated from rooftop solar panels. Approved on February 29, 2024, this scheme aims to significantly increase the adoption of solar rooftop capacity across the nation, making clean energy accessible and affordable for millions of Indian homes. With a substantial outlay of ₹75,021 crore until FY 2026-27, the yojana seeks to not only reduce electricity bills for citizens but also contribute to India's renewable energy targets and promote energy self-reliance.

Key Features and Objectives

  • Subsidy on Solar Rooftop Installations: The scheme offers significant financial assistance in the form of Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to households for installing rooftop solar (RTS) systems. This includes 60% of the system cost for up to 2 kW capacity and 40% for additional capacity between 2 kW and 3 kW, with benefits capped at 3 kW.
  • Free Electricity Up to 300 Units: Eligible households can receive up to 300 units of free electricity per month, generated from their rooftop solar installations.
  • Reduced Electricity Bills & Income Generation: The yojana aims to substantially cut down household electricity expenses, with potential annual savings of up to ₹15,000 for consumers using up to 300 units per month. Additionally, households can earn additional income by selling surplus power back to the electricity distribution companies (DISCOMs).
  • National Online Portal: A dedicated National Portal (pmsuryaghar.gov.in) has been established to facilitate the application process, provide information on system sizes, benefits calculators, vendor ratings, and assist consumers in making informed decisions.
  • Low-Interest Loans: Beneficiaries can access collateral-free, low-interest loan products (around 7% interest rate) for installing RTS systems up to 3 kW, with loans of up to ₹2 lakh available.
  • Promoting Domestic Manufacturing: The scheme mandates the use of solar modules and cells produced in India, thereby supporting the 'Make in India' initiative and boosting domestic manufacturing of solar components.
  • Development of Model Solar Villages: A Model Solar Village will be developed in each district to serve as an example for solar energy adoption in rural areas.
