For thousands of years, humans lived as nomadic hunter-gatherers, wandering from place to place in search of food and shelter. They ate wild fruits and vegetables and hunted animals for food. However, about 10,000 years ago, a monumental shift occurred: humans learned to cultivate land and grow crops. This marked the birth of agriculture, paving the way for stable settlements, civilizations, and modern societies.

Today, feeding a massive global population—and specifically a country like India with over 1.4 billion people—requires highly organized agricultural management. This is where Crop Production and Management comes into play. 1. What is a Crop? Understanding Crop Seasons

When plants of the same kind are cultivated at one place on a large scale, it is called a crop. For example, a crop of wheat means that all the plants grown in a field are wheat plants. India is a vast country with diverse climatic conditions like temperature, humidity, and rainfall varying from one region to another. Accordingly, there is a rich variety of crops grown in different parts of the country. Despite this diversity, crops can be broadly classified into two main seasonal categories:

  • Kharif Crops: These are the crops sown in the rainy season. In India, the rainy season generally lasts from June to September. These crops require a large amount of water to grow. Examples include paddy (rice), maize, soyabean, groundnut, and cotton.
  • Rabi Crops: These are the crops grown in the winter season, typically from October to March. They do not require as much water as Kharif crops and thrive in cooler climates. Examples include wheat, gram, peas, mustard, and linseed.
  • Zaid Crops: (Extra Knowledge) Grown in the short summer months between the Rabi and Kharif seasons (March to June), these include crops like watermelon, muskmelon, cucumber, and various fodder crops.

2. The Basic Practices of Crop Production

Cultivation of crops involves a series of activities undertaken by farmers over a period of time. These activities are referred to as agricultural practices. Let us understand each of these seven steps in detail:

Step 1: Preparation of Soil

This is the very first step before growing a crop. The soil must be turned and loosened. Why is this so crucial?

  • Root Respiration: Loosening the soil allows the roots of the crop plants to penetrate deep into the ground and breathe easily, even when they go deep into the soil.
  • Growth of Friendly Organisms: Loose soil helps in the growth of earthworms and microbes present in the soil. These organisms are known as "friends of the farmer" because they further turn and loosen the soil and add organic humus to it.
  • Nutrient Recycling: Dead plants and animals decompose in the soil, releasing their nutrients back. Turning the soil brings these nutrient-rich layers to the top so that plants can easily absorb them.

The process of loosening and turning the soil is called tilling or ploughing. This is done using a plough (drawn by bulls or tractors), a hoe (used for removing weeds and loosening soil), or a modern tractor-driven cultivator, which saves both labor and time.

Step 2: Sowing of Seeds

Sowing is the most important part of crop production. Before sowing, high-quality, clean, and healthy seeds of a good variety must be selected. Farmers prefer to use seeds which give a high yield.

The Floatation Test for Seed Quality: How do we separate damaged seeds from healthy ones? If you put seeds in a container of water, some will float while others will sink. Damaged seeds become hollow and are thus lighter, causing them to float on water. Healthy seeds are heavy and sink to the bottom.

Tools used for sowing include:

  • Traditional Tool: A funnel-shaped tool. Seeds are filled into the funnel, passed down through two or three pipes having sharp ends, which pierce into the soil and place seeds there.
  • Seed Drill: Nowadays, seed drills are used for sowing with the help of tractors. This tool sows the seeds uniformly at equal distances and depths. It ensures that seeds get covered by the soil after sowing, protecting them from being eaten by birds. It also prevents overcrowding of plants, allowing them to get sufficient sunlight, nutrients, and water from the soil.

Step 3: Adding Manure and Fertilizers

Continuous cultivation of crops makes the soil poor in nutrients. Therefore, farmers have to add manure to the fields to replenish the soil with nutrients. This process is called manuring. The substances which are added to the soil in the form of nutrients for the healthy growth of plants are called manure and fertilizers.

It is important to understand the key differences between these two substances:

  • Manure: An organic substance obtained from the decomposition of plant or animal wastes. It is prepared in fields, provides a lot of organic humus to the soil, is less rich in specific plant nutrients like Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium (NPK), but improves soil texture and water-retaining capacity.
  • Fertilizer: Inorganic chemical salts manufactured in factories. They do not provide any humus to the soil but are extremely rich in plant nutrients like Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium. However, excessive use of fertilizers can make the soil less fertile over time and cause water pollution.

Another excellent natural method of replenishing soil nutrients is crop rotation. This involves growing different crops alternately. For example, farmers in northern India used to grow legumes as fodder in one season and wheat in the next. This helped in the replenishment of the soil with nitrogen, thanks to Rhizobium bacteria present in the root nodules of leguminous plants, which fix atmospheric nitrogen.

Step 4: Irrigation

All living organisms need water to live. Water is essential for the proper growth and development of flowers, fruits, and seeds. Plants contain nearly 90% water. Nutrients dissolved in water are transported to each part of the plant. Water also protects the crop from both frost and hot air currents.

The supply of water to crops at regular intervals is called irrigation. The time and frequency of irrigation vary from crop to crop, soil to soil, and season to season. Sources of irrigation include wells, tube wells, ponds, lakes, rivers, dams, and canals.

Traditional methods of irrigation (like moat, chain pump, dhekli, and rahat) are cheaper but less efficient. Modern methods of irrigation, however, help us to use water economically. The two most prominent modern systems are:

  • Sprinkler System: This system is highly useful on uneven land where sufficient water is not available. Perpendicular pipes, having rotating nozzles on top, are joined to the main pipeline at regular intervals. Water flows through them under pressure with the help of a pump, escaping from the rotating nozzles to sprinkle on the crop as if it is raining. It is very useful for sandy soil.
  • Drip System: In this system, water falls drop by drop directly near the roots of the plants. It is the ultimate technique for watering fruit plants, gardens, and trees. Since there is absolutely no wastage of water, it is a boon in regions where availability of water is poor.

Step 5: Protection from Weeds

In a field, many other undesirable plants may grow naturally along with the crop. These undesirable plants are called weeds. The removal of weeds is called weeding.

Weeding is essential because weeds compete with the crop plants for water, nutrients, space, and light. Consequently, they affect the growth of the crop. Some weeds even interfere in harvesting and may be poisonous for animals and human beings.

Farmers remove weeds manually by uprooting or cutting them close to the ground from time to time, using a khurpi or a seed drill. Weeds are also controlled by using certain chemicals called weedicides, such as 2,4-D. These are sprayed in the fields to kill the weeds without damaging the crops. Because these chemicals are toxic, farmers must cover their nose and mouth with a piece of cloth during spraying.

Step 6: Harvesting

The cutting of crop after it is mature is called harvesting. It usually takes 3 to 4 months for a cereal crop to mature. Harvesting can be done manually using a sickle, or by a machine called a harvester.

Once the crop is harvested, the grain seeds need to be separated from the chaff. This process is called threshing. This is carried out with the help of a machine called a 'Combine', which is a combination of a harvester and a thresher. Farmers with smaller holdings of land do the separation of grain and chaff by a process called winnowing, where wind is used to separate the heavier grains from the lighter chaff.

Harvesting is a time of joy and celebration. After working hard for several months, the golden fields of standing crops ready for harvest fill the hearts of farmers with happiness. Thus, harvest seasons are marked by special festivals across India, such as Pongal, Bihu, Holi, Diwali, Nabanya, and Baisakhi.

Step 7: Storage

Storage of produce is a highly critical task. If the harvested grains are to be kept for longer periods, they must be safe from moisture, insects, rats, and microorganisms. Harvested grains have more moisture. If freshly harvested grains are stored without drying, they may get spoilt or attacked by organisms, losing their germination capacity. Therefore, before storing them, the grains must be properly dried in the sun to reduce their moisture content.

Farmers store grains in jute bags or metallic bins. However, large-scale storage of grains is done in silos and granaries to protect them from pests like rats and insects. At home, dried neem leaves are often used for storing food grains. For storing large quantities of grains in big godowns, specific chemical treatments are required to protect them from pests and microorganisms.

Just like plants provide us with various types of food, animals also provide us with different kinds of food materials (like milk, eggs, meat, honey, and fish).
