Assam: State Government Orders Expulsion of Five Declared Foreigners

In a significant move, the Assam government has ordered the expulsion of five individuals who were declared 'foreigners' by a Foreigners' Tribunal. The expulsion orders were issued under the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950, requiring the five individuals from Sonitpur district to leave Assam within 24 hours. The five individuals, Hanufa, Mariyam Nessa, Fatema, Monowara, and Amjad Ali, were declared foreigners ex parte by the tribunal on October 24.

The expulsion notice, issued by the District Commissioner of Sonitpur, states that the presence of these individuals is “detrimental to the interest of the general public and also for the internal security of the state.” This is the first known use of the 1950 Act since the Assam cabinet approved a standard operating procedure for its implementation earlier this year. Police have stated that the five individuals are currently absconding.
