Bihar Assembly Elections
The political temperature in India is soaring as the Bihar Assembly elections dominate social media feeds and news headlines. Today marks the final day of campaigning for the second and final phase of the elections, and political heavyweights are leaving no stone unturned. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, addressing a rally in Sasaram, took a swipe at the INDIA bloc, accusing them of wanting to create a "corridor for infiltrators" in contrast to the BJP's focus on an "industrial corridor". Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also been actively campaigning, recently cautioning voters that the RJD-led opposition might resort to intimidation if they come to power. On the other side, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and RJD's Tejashwi Yadav have been leading the charge for the 'Mahagathbandhan'. Yadav expressed confidence in their victory, stating that the people of Bihar have voted for change. The election has not been without controversy, as an official was suspended and an FIR was registered after VVPAT slips were discovered on a roadside in Samastipur, raising concerns about electoral integrity.
Kuki-Zo Groups Renew Demand for Union Territory
The long-standing ethnic tensions in Manipur are back in the spotlight as Kuki-Zo insurgent groups have renewed their demand for a separate Union Territory with a legislative assembly. Representatives from the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and the United People's Front (UPF) recently held talks with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to press their case. The core of their argument is the assertion that coexistence with the Meitei community within the current administrative structure of Manipur is no longer possible following the ethnic violence in 2023 that resulted in significant loss of life and displacement. This demand comes after a Suspension of Operations (SoO) pact was reinstated in September 2025, which includes a clause for a "negotiated political settlement within the Constitution of India" while reaffirming Manipur's territorial integrity. The MHA, however, has reportedly not agreed to the demand for a Union Territory with a legislature.
ISRO's Gaganyaan Mission Milestone
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has once again captured the nation's imagination with a significant step forward in its ambitious human spaceflight program, Gaganyaan. ISRO successfully conducted a crucial crew escape system test, a critical milestone for the mission scheduled to launch in 2026. This test is vital to ensure the safety of the astronauts in case of any anomaly during the launch. The successful completion of this test demonstrates ISRO's commitment to astronaut safety and the progress of the Gaganyaan mission. In addition to this, ISRO has also released updated data from the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter, which is expected to enhance research on the Moon's polar regions and provide new insights into the early solar system. These developments have generated considerable buzz and pride among Indians, highlighting the country's growing prowess in space exploration.
Delhi's Worsening Air Quality
Residents of Delhi and other parts of North India are grappling with a severe deterioration in air quality, a recurring crisis during this time of the year. Following the Diwali festivities, a dense layer of smog has enveloped the national capital, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) breaching the 400 mark in several areas, pushing it into the 'severe' category. Authorities have urged citizens to take precautions, including reducing vehicle use and avoiding the open burning of waste, to help curb the rising pollution levels. The dip in air quality has been a major topic of discussion online, with many expressing their concerns over the health impacts and the need for more effective long-term solutions to this annual environmental problem.
