1. What is a Mineral?
A naturally occurring substance that has a definite chemical composition is a mineral. Minerals are not evenly distributed over space; they are concentrated in particular areas or rock formations. Some minerals are found in areas which are not easily accessible, such as the Arctic ocean bed and Antarctica. Minerals are formed in different types of geological environments, under varying conditions.
2. Classification of Minerals
Geologists classify minerals based on their composition mainly into two major categories: metallic and non-metallic.
- Metallic Minerals: These contain metal in raw form. Metals are hard substances that conduct heat and electricity and have a characteristic luster or shine. Examples include iron ore, bauxite, and manganese. Metallic minerals can be further divided into:
- Ferrous Minerals: Contain iron (e.g., iron ore, manganese, chromite).
- Non-Ferrous Minerals: Do not contain iron but may contain some other metal like gold, silver, copper, or lead.
- Non-Metallic Minerals: These do not contain metals. Examples include limestone, mica, gypsum, coal, and petroleum. Mineral fuels like coal and petroleum are also non-metallic minerals.
3. Extraction of Minerals
The process of taking out minerals from rocks buried under the earth's surface is called mining. Depending on how deep the minerals are buried, mining is done in different ways:
- Quarrying: Minerals that lie at shallow depths are simply dug out by the process known as quarrying.
- Drilling: Deep wells are bored to take out petroleum and natural gas. This is called drilling.
- Shaft Mining: Deep bore-holes, called shafts, have to be made to reach mineral deposits that lie at great depths. This is called shaft mining.
4. Power Resources
Power or energy plays a vital role in our lives. We also need power for industry, agriculture, transport, communication, and defense. Power resources are broadly categorized into two groups:
- Conventional Sources of Energy: These are sources of energy which have been common use for a long time. Firewood and fossil fuels are the two main conventional energy sources.
- Coal: Extensively used for fossil fuel energy, generating electricity (thermal power).
- Petroleum: Often called 'black gold', it is the lifeline of transport and petrochemical industries.
- Natural Gas: Found with petroleum deposits and is released when crude oil is brought to the surface.
- Hydel Power: Water stored in dams is made to fall through pipes, turning turbine blades to generate hydroelectricity.
- Non-Conventional Sources of Energy: Increasing use of fossil fuels is leading to shortages. Therefore, tapping cleaner, renewable sources has become crucial. These include:
- Solar Energy: Photovoltaic cells convert sunlight into electricity.
- Wind Energy: High-speed winds rotate wind mills to generate power.
- Nuclear Energy: Obtained from energy stored in the nuclei of atoms of naturally occurring radioactive elements like uranium and thorium.
- Geothermal Energy: Heat energy obtained from the earth.
- Tidal Energy: Energy harnessed from tides by building dams across narrow openings of the sea.
- Biogas: Organic waste such as dead plant and animal material, animal dung, and kitchen waste can be converted into a gaseous fuel called biogas.
