Human beings themselves are essential components of resources because they interact with nature through technology and create institutions to accelerate economic development.

In Class X Geography, Chapter 1 titled Resources and Development, students explore how resources are classified, why planning is vital for sustainable development, how land and soil are utilized in India, and what methods can be adopted to preserve these vital natural assets for future generations.

1. What is a Resource?

A resource is not merely a free gift of nature. It is the result of human interaction with natural materials. For a natural element to become a resource, three crucial conditions must be met:

  • Technologically Accessible: We must possess the technical knowledge and tools to \textract and utilize it.
  • Economically Feasible: The cost of \textraction should not outweigh the economic benefits derived from it.
  • Culturally Acceptable: The society must accept its usage without severe social or ethical conflicts.

2. Classification of Resources

Resources can be classified into distinct categories based on four main criteria:

A. On the Basis of Origin

  • Biotic Resources: Derived from the biosphere and having life, such as human beings, flora, fauna, fisheries, and livestock.
  • Abiotic Resources: Composed of non-living things, such as rocks, metals, air, and water.

B. On the Basis of Exhaustibility

  • Renewable Resources: Resources that can be renewed or reproduced by physical, chemical, or mechanical processes (e.g., solar energy, wind energy, water, forests).
  • Non-Renewable Resources: Minerals and fossil fuels that take millions of years in their formation. They get exhausted with continuous use.

C. On the Basis of Ownership

  • Individual Resources: Owned privately by individuals (e.g., plot, house, private wells, plantation).
  • Community Owned Resources: Accessible to all members of the community (e.g., public parks, picnic spots, village ponds, playgrounds).
  • National Resources: Technically, all resources within political boundaries and territorial waters (up to 12 nautical miles from the coast) belong to the nation.
  • International Resources: Regulated by international institutions. Oceanic resources beyond 200 nautical miles of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) belong to open ocean.

D. On the Basis of Status of Development

  • Potential Resources: Found in a region but have not been utilized fully (e.g., solar and wind energy potential in Rajasthan and Gujarat).
  • Developed Resources: Surveyed, and their quality and quantity have been determined for utilization.
  • Stock: Materials in the environment that have the potential to satisfy human needs, but humans do not have appropriate technology to access them (e.g., splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen for energy).
  • Reserves: Subset of the stock which can be put into use with help of existing technology, but their use has not been started on a large scale (e.g., river water for hydroelectric power).

3. Development of Resources and Sustainable Existence

Indiscriminate depletion of resources by human beings has led to major global crises, including global warming, ozone layer depletion, environmental pollution, and land degradation. To overcome this, Sustainable Development is essential. It means development should take place without damaging the environment, and development in the present should not compromise the needs of future generations.

The historic Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit (1992) adopted Agenda 21 to achieve global sustainable development and combat environmental damage, poverty, and disease through global cooperation.

4. Resource Planning in India

Resource planning is a complex three-step process in India:

  • Identification and Inventory: Surveying, mapping, qualitative and quantitative estimation, and measurement of resources across regions.
  • Planning Structure: Developing a spatial planning framework endowed with appropriate technology, skill, and institutional set-up.
  • Matching Plans: Aligning resource development plans with overall national development plans.

5. Land Resources and Land Use Pattern in India

Land is a natural resource of utmost importance. India’s geographical area is 3.28 million square kilometers, distributed topographically as follows:

  • Plains (43%): Provide facilities for agriculture and industry.
  • Mountains (30%): Ensure perennial flow of rivers and support tourism and ecology.
  • Plateaus (27%): Possess rich reserves of minerals, fossil fuels, and forests.

Land degradation in India is caused by deforestation, overgrazing, mining, and over-irrigation. Measures like afforestation, proper management of grazing lands, stabilized sand dunes, and control of mining activities help conserve land.

6. Soil as a Resource

Soil is the most important renewable natural resource. Major soil types found in India include:

  • Alluvial Soil: Highly fertile, deposited by Indus, Ganga, and Brahmaputra rivers. Found in northern plains and eastern coastal plains. Divided into Bangar (old alluvial) and Khadar (new alluvial).

  • Terrace Farming: Cutting steps on slopes to restrict erosion (common in Western Himalayas).
