While James never specified a percentage, his influential words likely laid the groundwork for the myth to take hold.
The specific, and falsely precise, figure of 10% is often attributed to Lowell Thomas, an American writer and broadcaster. In his 1936 foreword to Dale Carnegie's hugely popular self-help book, "How to Win Friends and Influence People," Thomas wrote: "Professor William James of Harvard used to say that the average man develops only ten percent of his latent mental ability." This statement, though a misinterpretation of James's work, was printed in one of the best-selling books of all time, giving the myth a powerful and enduring platform. The idea was further perpetuated by the self-help movement of the 1920s and beyond, which capitalized on the appealing notion of untapped potential. Even claims that Albert Einstein attributed his genius to using more than 10% of his brain, though unsubstantiated, have contributed to the myth's longevity.
Early neurological research also inadvertently contributed to the misconception. In the 1920s and 1930s, researcher Karl Lashley conducted experiments where he removed large portions of the cerebral cortex in rats and found that they could still relearn specific tasks. This led to the idea that some parts of the brain were not essential. Additionally, early neurologists were puzzled by the functions of many brain regions, especially in the vast cerebral cortex, where the effects of damage could be subtle. They also noted the brain's composition of a large number of glial cells, which were initially thought to have only minor functions compared to neurons, further fueling the idea of unused brain mass. Brain Damage and Disease
