A Balloon Full of Sunshine?

Kabir: Hey Priya! I was just thinking about my birthday party last month. It was so much fun, especially the big bunch of balloons I got. I let one go by accident and it just flew up and up until I couldn't see it anymore. It was filled with helium. Where does helium even come from? Do we just make it in a factory?

Priya: That's a great question, Kabir! We don't really make it; we find it deep underground. But what if I told you that before humans ever found helium on Earth, we discovered it... on the Sun?

Kabir: On the SUN?! No way! How is that even possible? Did an astronaut go there with a special jar to collect it? But the Sun is super-hot!

Priya: Haha, no, not exactly! No one has ever been to the Sun. Scientists found it from right here on Earth by looking at the Sun’s light in a very special way. It's a super cool story about a science called spectroscopy!

Decoding Sunlight's Secret Message

Kabir: Spectro-what? That sounds complicated. Is it like looking through a telescope?

Priya: It's a bit like that, but with a special attachment. You know how when light passes through a glass prism, it splits into a rainbow of colours? That rainbow is called a spectrum.

Kabir: Oh yeah! I've done that in science class. It's so pretty! But how does a rainbow tell you what the Sun is made of?

Priya: Well, it turns out that every single element in the universe—like oxygen, iron, or gold—gives off its own unique pattern of colours when it gets very hot. It’s like a secret barcode made of light! When scientists look at the light from a star like our Sun, they can see these 'barcodes' and figure out exactly which elements are in that star. The science of reading these light barcodes is called spectroscopy.

Kabir: Wow! So it's like the Sun is sending us a secret message in its light, and spectroscopy is the decoder ring?

Priya: That’s a perfect way to put it! And that's exactly how we found helium.

A Discovery During an Eclipse

Kabir: So, who were the super-smart scientists who decoded it? And when did this happen?

Priya: It happened a long, long time ago, back in 1868. There was a total solar eclipse, which is when the Moon completely blocks the Sun for a few minutes. This is a great time for scientists to study the Sun’s outer atmosphere, called the corona. A French astronomer named Pierre Janssen was in India, in a city called Guntur, to watch the eclipse.

Kabir: He came all the way to India for that? He must have been really dedicated!

Priya: He was! While he was using his spectroscope to look at the light from the Sun's edge, he saw something strange. He saw a bright yellow line in the spectrum that he didn't recognise. It didn't match the 'barcode' of any element known on Earth at the time.

Kabir: So, it was a totally new element? From space?

Priya: Exactly! Around the same time, an English scientist named Norman Lockyer made the same observation. He was the one who realised it must be a new element that was on the Sun but maybe not on Earth. He decided to name it 'Helium' after 'Helios', which is the Greek word for the Sun god. Isn't that cool?

From the Sun to the Earth

Kabir: That's amazing! An element named after the Sun because that’s where we first found it. So… when did we finally find it here on our planet?

Priya: It took a while! It wasn't until almost 30 years later, in 1895, that a scientist named Sir William Ramsay found helium on Earth. He was doing an experiment with a mineral and found a gas trapped inside it. When he analysed the gas with a spectroscope, he saw the exact same bright yellow line that Janssen and Lockyer had seen in the sunlight decades earlier. It was helium!

Kabir: So the whole time, this 'Sun element' was hiding on Earth too! And now we use it to fill balloons. Is that because it’s super light?

Priya: You got it. Helium is the second-lightest element in the entire universe! That’s why a balloon filled with it floats up into the sky. But it has lots of other important jobs, too. It’s used to cool the powerful magnets in MRI machines at hospitals, in rockets to help launch them into space, and even in the air tanks that deep-sea divers use.
