Once an object has utility, it acquires Value. Value means worth.
Some resources have economic value, while others do not. For example, metals like gold or iron have a market price and economic value. On the other hand, a beautiful landscape or a sunset might not have a price tag, but it is still a resource because it satisfies our aesthetic and psychological needs. Over time, some resources can become economically valuable. Your grandmother’s home remedies for a cough might not have commercial value today, but if they are patented and sold by a medical firm tomorrow, they would acquire economic value.
2. Factors Changing Substances into Resources
Two main factors that can turn a substance into a resource are Time and Technology. Both are related to the needs of the people. For example, the discovery of fire led to the practice of cooking, and the invention of the wheel eventually resulted in modern modes of transport. Similarly, technology allows us to convert fast-flowing water into electricity (hydroelectricity), making water a significant energy resource today.
3. Classification of Resources
Resources are generally classified into three categories: Natural, Human-made, and Human resources.
A. Natural Resources
These are resources drawn from nature and used without much modification. Examples include the air we breathe, water in our rivers, soils, and minerals. Natural resources are further classified based on several criteria:
- Level of Development and Use:
- Actual Resources: These are resources whose quantity is known and are being used in the present. For example, the rich deposits of coal in the Ruhr region of Germany or petroleum in West Asia.
- Potential Resources: These are resources whose entire quantity may not be known and which are not being used at present. C. Human Resources
The most important resource on Earth is People. It is the ideas, knowledge, inventions, and discoveries of humans that lead to the creation of more resources. Education and health help in making people a valuable resource. Improving the quality of people’s skills so that they are able to create more resources is known as Human Resource Development.
4. Conserving Resources and Sustainable Development
Using resources carefully and giving them time to get renewed is called Resource Conservation. However, we must go a step further. We need to balance the need to use resources and also conserve them for the future. This concept is called Sustainable Development.
Sustainable development means development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It involves the Three R’s: Reduce consumption, Recycle items, and Reuse things. The future of our planet and its people is linked with our ability to maintain and preserve the life support system that nature provides.
