MeitY Unveils New AI Governance Framework – No New Law, For Now!
In a major development, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has released its much-awaited AI Governance Guidelines. The big news here is that the government is taking a 'hands-off' or 'light-touch' approach, choosing to adapt existing laws rather than creating a brand new, rigid law for Artificial Intelligence. This is a big deal, yaar! It shows that the government wants to promote innovation without 'throttling' the growth of AI in the country. The framework focuses on reinterpreting current laws like the IT Act and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act to tackle AI-related challenges like bias and misinformation. The guidelines are built on seven core principles, or 'Sutras', including trust, human-centric design, and responsible innovation. Basically, the idea is to build guardrails for the safe and ethical use of AI without slowing down the incredible progress our startups and tech giants are making. The committee has recommended a techno-legal approach, which means embedding legal safeguards directly into the technology systems to make compliance almost automatic.
