MeitY Gets Tough on Deepfakes with New AI Rules

The biggest news doing the rounds is the government's plan to tackle AI-generated content head-on. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has proposed new amendments to the IT Rules, 2021, to regulate deepfakes and other synthetic media. The main idea is to bring more transparency and accountability to what we see online. With the rise of convincing deepfake videos and audio clips, the government has warned that such tech could be 'weaponised' to spread misinformation, manipulate elections, or even commit financial fraud.

So, what's the big change? The draft rules mandate that platforms like Meta, Google, and X (formerly Twitter) must clearly label any content that is AI-generated. This isn't just a tiny footnote, either. The proposal requires these labels to cover at least 10% of a visual display's surface area or the first 10% of an audio or video clip's duration. Social media companies with over 50 lakh users will also need to get a declaration from users if their uploaded content is synthetic and use technical measures to verify it. This is a huge step towards making our online world safer and more trustworthy. The government is currently inviting feedback from the public and industry on these proposals until November 6, 2025.

Jio's 5G Fixed Wireless Service Nears 1 Crore Users!

On the connectivity front, Reliance Jio is absolutely smashing it. The telecom giant is on the verge of hitting the 1 crore (10 million) subscriber mark for its 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) business, which includes Jio AirFiber. According to the latest data from TRAI, Jio's 5G FWA base stood at 9.5 million users at the end of September 2025. This rapid growth is a huge part of Jio's strategy to monetize its massive $25 billion investment in 5G infrastructure.

Why is this a big deal? Well, the Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) for AirFiber is around ₹650-₹700 per month, which is more than three times the mobile ARPU. By aggressively expanding its AirFiber network, Jio is not only bringing high-speed internet to more homes but also significantly boosting its revenue as it gears up for a potential IPO by the end of 2025. The company is aiming to connect over one million homes every month, showing just how fast the demand for high-speed broadband is growing across the country.

Nothing Phone 3a Lite Arrives in India Today!

Get your wallets ready, because today's the day! London-based tech brand Nothing is officially launching its new budget-friendly smartphone, the Phone 3a Lite, in India and worldwide on October 29. This is set to be the company's most affordable model yet, with an expected price tag of around ₹20,000. A teaser video posted by the company showed off a glowing LED on the back, suggesting it will feature a simplified version of their famous Glyph lighting system to keep costs down.

While it will likely maintain the signature transparent and minimalist design, there's an interesting change on the software side. Nothing has announced that it will start including pre-installed third-party apps, like Instagram, on its more affordable devices, and the Phone 3a Lite could be one of the first to feature this change. It marks a shift from their usual clean UI approach but is likely a move to make the phone more accessible in the competitive mid-range market. The phone is expected to launch in classic black and white colour options. Keep an eye out for the official launch at 6:30 PM IST today!

Digital India & Startups

In a wonderful move for inclusivity, the Indian government is doubling down on making technology accessible to everyone, no matter what language they speak. A new initiative is harnessing AI platforms like Bhashini, BharatGen, and Adi-Vaani to integrate all 22 of India's Scheduled Languages into our digital infrastructure. This means more citizens will be able to access critical government services, educational content, and information online in their native tongue, truly fulfilling the vision of a Digital India.

Meanwhile, the Indian startup scene continues to attract big money. In the week of October 20-25, Indian startups raised over $421 million in funding. The star of the show was conversational AI platform Uniphore, which secured a massive $260 million in its Series F funding round from major investors including NVIDIA and AMD. This highlights the massive global confidence in India's growing AI and enterprise tech sectors.
