Kabir: Mira, you won't believe what my cousin in Kerala told me! He said he saw a tree that can actually walk away from its spot in the forest. Is that even possible?

Mira: Hey Kabir! That sounds like something straight out of a fantasy movie, like The Lord of the Rings, but believe it or not, it is actually real! It is called the walking palm tree, or Socratea exorrhiza, found in the rainforests of Central and South America.

Wow, how does that work? Do they just get up and stroll around like people?

Mira: Not quite! They don't have legs, of course. Instead of having one single trunk going straight down into the ground like a normal tree, the walking palm has a whole bundle of stilt roots that prop it up high in the air, looking a bit like an octopus out of water.

Kabir: That looks so cool! But how does looking like an octopus help a tree walk?

Mira: Scientists think that when another large tree falls on a walking palm and breaks its roots, or when soil washes away from underneath it, the tree needs to adapt. It slowly grows brand new stilt roots reaching out toward better soil or more sunlight, while the old roots on the dark side slowly rot and die away. Over time, the whole tree shifts its position!

Kabir: So it's kind of like moving your furniture inch by inch until you find a better spot in your room! Do they move very fast?

Mira: Oh, not at all, Kabir. It is \textremely slow! They might only move a few centimeters, or maybe up to a meter, in an entire year. You definitely wouldn't want to sit and watch one move because you would be waiting forever!

Kabir: That is still amazing. Mother Nature always finds the strangest ways to survive. Are there other reasons why they grow those stilt roots?

Mira: Yes! Those roots lift the tree high above the soggy, crowded rainforest floor. This helps the tree avoid getting choked by heavy mud and allows it to reach up to where the sunlight is brighter. It is a brilliant survival trick in a very competitive jungle.
